Double cheeseburgers for breakfast
Best Saturday morning ever.
Due in part to various Army supply idiosyncrasies our unit has to send soldiers individually to Kuwait for an equipment issue. A real pain, but it gives the soldiers a break and they do need/want the equipment, so it is a necessary evil.
The major side benefit of the trip to Kuwait is that there is a recently established McDonald's on site. Which means, when you have good NCOs, they will bring you back a bag of double cheeseburgers.
This morning I enjoyed a sweet McDonald double cheeseburger for breakfast, fresh in overnight from Kuwait. Forty-five seconds of reheating in the microwave and I had a delicious treat unparalleled in this nation. And the best part? There are three more in the fridge for later.
The NCOs had picked up five, but had to trade one away to get a ride back to the flightline. Cheeseburgers - the Army's version of prison currency.

You know, I wish there was something I could do or send out there to help you with what you're going through right now. I might do it if it was easy enough to do. The worst I ever endured along these lines was six months of working as a prison guard at GITMO, but there was a McDonald's there. I ate at the McDonalds, though, and I read at the base library, and I even took my SAT's there on the government's thin dime. Didn't really fix the problem. Still sucked. So I'll just say thanks, and hope that makes you feel better. Because I am really, very happy that it is you and not me over there. I won't make another empty gesture and pretend that things are otherwise.

Thanks is good enough for me.
My life is not really all that bad. If someone told me I'd have all that I do in the middle of Iraq I would not have believed it.
They are installing a Subway (sandwiches, not mass transit) at Q-West as well as a coffee shop. And there is Baskin & Robbins at the DFAC. Somehow, in the middle of the desert, weight gain is a serious issue for unit commanders.
Though not for the Marines and combat units on the smaller bases. I'm constantly embarassed at our excess here relative to their MRE lifestyle.
So I do appreciate the thanks, even when I feel guilty that my wartime experience doesn't even remotely resemble what people visualize I should be enduring.
Between the thanks and the eviseration of Joel Stein, I have all the support I need to keep me going.
Hamburgers for breakfast. Yuck.
Yuck?! Wha?! Huh?! Who are you and what are you talking about?!
Since this is a family blog, the only thing I'll say to that is you must never have tried it. Micky D's Doublecheeseburgers have been the savior of many a hung over morning, and do not deserve such defamation.
Micky D's Doublecheeseburgers are pretty good hang over food, but nothing compared to the joy of eating White Castles and O-rings. Whiteys are the ultimate hang over food, if you can eat a bag of Whiteys and not keel over, you're cured.
You know they sell them frozen in boxes of six and twelve, if I could find a way to get some to you still frozen I would, just to say thanks for your service.
Keep up the good work!
I prefer the healthier choice of granola and fruit for breakfast. If you want to know who I am, read my blog! And I have no idea what white castles and o-rings are....
